How to train a horse to ride the beach

Riding a horse can be a thrilling experience, but riding it on the beach is even more special. Can you imagine the thrill of galloping across the sandy beach on horseback? To do it safely, you will need to train your horse to ride on the beach.

To insure that the outcome of your beach ride is safe and fun, you will need to prepare your horse for the experience. The horses could be scared of the ocean, and they need to be trained not to fear it before attempting to take them to the beach. Experiment with them in their own environment by setting up an ocean scene with a large tarp or digging an area to add water to. Walk your horse around the area to teach him that he is safe and has nothing to fear. Let him grow to trust your leadership in guiding him. Let the horse walk around the tarp or water pit, and then teach him that it is safe to walk into the water. Then when he goes to the beach, your horse will trust that you are not taking him into danger. Your horse will feel safe with you in control.

Once you see that your horse is not scared to go near a bed of water or pretend water, you can test him at the beach. But if he seems to panic near the water, you might consider staying back a little ways away from the water edge until he feels more confident and less afraid of the water. With the right training for your horse, you can have an unforgettable ride on the beach; a ride that you will want to repeat time and time again. So prepare your horse in advance for that fantastic ride on the beach.
